THE LOVE STORY
TECHNIQUES
Techniques Within a few weeks of making his first attempt at painting with oils from his local art shop, Anthony Brandt was dissatisfied. The irritation was not however with his painting, but with the paint. He felt that even Rubens, whom Brandt admired for his exquisite brushwork, could not have coped with these 20th century branded oils. This led Brandt on an epic journey of research to discover the secrets of 17th century masters’ methods and paints. He eventually found that he could make his own paints using the same ingredients as contemporary manufacturers; the problem however lay with the medium with which the paints were mixed – wax, pigments and linseed. Only by controlling a number of differently treated linseed oils and by adding very small quantities of various other additives, such as Venice Turpentine, did he achieve the required quality of paint. He also perfected the quality of non-running resins for the glaze, to produce the required shadows and depth of luminosity, thus mixing and blending his paints to the highest standard. Likewise he found the usual practice of painting on canvas unsuited to his technique. He eventually settled for a ground that he felt was both durable…
THE CHAPEL
House, Studio and Gardens… Anthony Brandt and Mitzi brought a derelict Welsh chapel in the scenic Brecon Beacons in Wales in 1971. They converted it into a beautiful, luxurious home and studio with ample natural light. They also extensively landscaped the grounds which had been little more than a flat barren field into a scenic oasis, including a waterfall with nymph statues created by Anthony. The before photographs, in black and white, of the chapel are as Anthony and Mitzi brought it, and the colour photographs are of the chapel as it stands today, and the grounds after 25 years of maturing.
